Beating The Bully
Whether you’re playing sit and go tournaments or cash games there are always going to be aggressive players and they can make the day really long. You can’t change the fact that some poker players are aggressive, the only you can do is learn how to play against them so that you can defeat them.
It may seem like aggressive players make money on the table, but if you sit there all day with them you’ll notice most times there down money. Aggressive players are very simple to play against and very easy to trap into paying you off. I personally don’t play aggressive poker and I love when I’m against an aggressive player because it’s easy money.
Before you can trap an aggressive poker player you need to first watch the table and determine who is doing the pushing and playing aggressively. Once you have determined who the aggressive player is at the table you just need to wait for your monster hands to come along. Once your monster hands come just slow play it at first pre-flop and see if the aggressive player raises. If the player does raise the blinds then you should simply flat call the player.
Once the flop hits the board if you’ve hit then just check it over to the aggressive player. They will usually make a continuation bet into the pot after the flop to make it seem like they hit the board. Now they may have hit the board depending on what came and you might want to push all-in now. If you’re confident that you’ve got the best hand though then I suggest just flat calling again and wait for the turn.
As the turn hits you should check into the player again and let them either make another bet or check. If they come out betting again depending on how big the pot is and how many chips you have left you should either just raise all-in or call again. If there are straight or flush options make sure you push in now as you don’t want a killer river card. If you have the nuts then continue slow playing and flat call.
Once the river hits the board you need to come out betting. Depending on the pot size and how many chips you have you’ll either make a value bet or go all-in. Typically if the aggressive player has nothing they will just fold now and you’ll take the pot. If you make a small enough value bet then they might try coming over the top and you can win even more chips off of them.
It’s not very difficult to trap an aggressive poker player and you should try to do it as much as possible. Sometimes they will have something so make sure you have the nuts or close to the nuts if you’re making big bets.
