MTT Strategy
An MTT is a multi-table tournament and there excellent ways for new poker players to learn how to play the game of poker better and there also great for good poker players to win some big prizes. One of the best benefits of playing in MTT’s is that you don’t need to invest much money and although the chances of winning aren’t that great, most tournaments will pay prizes to the top 10% of the players. This means you only have to be in the top 10% of players in order to do well consistently and you’ll also nee some luck.
One of the pitfalls of multi-table tournaments that a lot of veteran poker players don’t like is the fact that there is more luck involved in these then a typical sit and go tournament or ring table game. Since there are quite a few people in most MTT’s you’re going to notice that even when you should win some hands you’ll lose and be eliminated from some of the tournaments on bad beats. This happens when you play multi-table tournaments and should be taken into consideration before playing.
I’ve played in multi-table tournaments before for hours and then end up losing on a bad beat and don’t win any money. This means I’ve spent hours playing in a tournament that I lost money in, now although poker betting is fun noone likes spending hours playing a tournament to win nothing.
When you start a MTT you need to make sure that you’re ready to play poker for several hours based on the size of the MTT you join. If you know you’re not going to be patient after an hour of playing and throw your chips away then you should just save your money and not even bother playing. If you’re up for the time commitment then join the tournament.
In the early stages of an MTT the action is going to be crazy and a ton of players will be trying to double up there stacks. Once you have a good hand you should try doing the same so that you stand a chance down the road in the tournament. If you wait to long to try and win a nice pot then you’re going to get eaten by the blinds as they become higher.
If you manage to double up a couple times and you’re in contentions for winning money in the MTT then you can start playing how you normally would and be more selective about the hands you play. At this point you can only get your chips in the pot when you’re the best and you can’t do anything other then that. It’s also smart that when you’re playing near the end of a tournament and you’re almost down to the money positions you don’t want to risk your chips. Let other opponents go out of the tournament and just sit until you’re down to the money positions so that you at least win a bit of money for your time commitment.
