When to Bluff
As a poker player you’re going to need to learn how to bluff and when you should bluff players so that you win pots when you don’t have anything. If you only play and bet pots when you have the nuts then you’re not going to win much money and you’re not going to have much fun. In this article we’re going to take a look at when you should bluff your opponents. Before we look at when you should bluff your opponents though we need to look at the different forms of bluffing.
- A stone cold bluff is simply making a big bet with absolutely nothing and no draw in hopes of taking down the pot. This is the riskiest bluff that you can perform and it’s going to take some serious guts on your part to make the move.
- A semi-bluff is when you make a bet trying to take down the pot with a marginal hand which probably isn’t the best hand. Bluffing when you have a straight or flush draw can also be classified as a semi-bluff since you haven’t made your hand yet and you’re just trying to win the pot right away.
- The last form of bluffing is playing the board and making it look like you hit. For instance, if you raised pre-flop and you don’t hit the flop, but you make a continuation bet to steal the pot you’d be making a bluff by representing that you hit the flop. This is the easiest form of bluffing and since most players will fold to a large bet when they didn’t hit the flop you’ll get away with this bluff the most.
Now that you know the different forms of bluffing you’re probably wondering when you can bluff your opponent without getting caught. There is no way to guarantee that your opponent is going to fold and you’re going to need to rely on your reading skills for the most part. You can throw in a bluff during any stage of a hand, the only problem is choosing when to bluff.
What’s going to determine whether you bluff or not is based on the opponents you’re playing against. If they’re weak players then you’ll be able to bluff and steal the pots basically any hand as long as the player doesn’t have a monster hand. Throw in a small bet to see if they fold and if they don’t and they’re generally tight you’re probably in trouble and should slow down. Bad poker players are the toughest to bluff so try avoiding bluffing bad opponents because sometimes they’ll call with next to nothing and burn you. Another bluffing opportunity to avoid is when you’re bluffing against the short stack on the table because they’re more likely to cal a big bet in hopes of doubling up. You need to determine whether your opponents are strong in the hand or not based on how they played the hand and if you think they aren’t then it’s a good time to bluff.
Instances in poker betting when it’s a good idea to bluff because you have no clue what your opponents might have which is why bluffing is based on your reading ability of opponents. When you sense weakness you should try bluffing the pot and stealing it and when you sense strength avoid betting into the pot. You’re not going to be right every time and you’re going to lose some money on some bluffs when you’re caught, but if you keep a good enough ratio then you’ll make more money then you lose.
